🌪️ What is a Polar Low?
A polar low is a short-lived, intense, low-pressure weather system that develops over ice-free ocean waters in polar and sub-polar regions.
Unlike massive tropical hurricanes that span hundreds of kilometers and take days to build, a polar low is much smaller—typically between 100 to 500 kilometers in diameter—and can materialize in a matter of hours. Despite their compact size, they pack a tremendous punch, frequently producing severe gale to hurricane-force winds and intense, heavy snow squalls.

Polar lows develop through a process called polar low genesis, which relies on extreme atmospheric temperature differences.

Rapid Onset ("Bomb Genesis"): A polar low can transform a calm sea into a severe storm within just 3 to 6 hours, leaving very little time for ships or coastal towns to prepare.
Extreme Wind & Waves: Winds routinely reach Force 9 to 11 on the Beaufort scale (gale to storm force), generating massive, chaotic sea waves and dangerous ocean swells.
Whiteout Conditions: The heavy, dense snowfall combined with high winds causes zero-visibility conditions (whiteouts), disrupting air travel and coastal road transport.
Heavy Vessel Icing: Cold winds blowing sea spray onto ships create rapid ice buildup on hulls and superstructures, which can critically compromise a vessel's stability and risk capsizing.
